About the position

The Accountant position at the Texas Department of Public Safety involves performing routine accounting, administrative, and financial work. The role requires applying DPS and state Comptroller procedures for the preparation and maintenance of accounting work, processing purchase and travel vouchers, and reconciling invoices. The position operates under moderate supervision and requires effective communication and organizational skills to manage financial transactions and maintain accurate records.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and process invoices to audit and reconcile statements.
  • Prepare purchase vouchers for payments of goods and services, p-card statements, and/or travel vouchers.
  • Communicate and follow-up with internal customers to resolve payment discrepancies.
  • Enter information into the agency's automated accounting system after obtaining appropriate approvals.
  • Maintain accounting files and records.
  • Follow-up with vendors to request invoices as needed.
  • Assist in training internal and external staff members.
  • Assist in preparation of special reports.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required; two-year college degree in accounting or related field preferred.
  • Minimum two years of experience in accounting, auditing, or financial record reconciliation.
  • Valid driver license from state of residence required.
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and automated financial systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with CAPPS and SharePoint.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with CAPPS Financials preferred.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.
  • Strong analytical reasoning and attention to detail.
