About the position

The Revenue Accounting Technician position at the Texas Department of Public Safety involves performing technical accounting and clerical support work related to revenue items received in cash or cash instrument form. The role requires routine clerical work, including the receipt, processing, and distribution of incoming mail, as well as detailed assignments in recording, classifying, examining, and verifying financial records and documents. The position operates under moderate supervision with limited latitude for independent judgment.

Responsibilities

  • Classify, code, post, and balance financial accounting documents and records.
  • Compile statistical, financial, accounting, or auditing reports and tables pertaining to cash receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, and profits and losses.
  • Open, sort, and process incoming mail and supporting documentation, ensuring completeness and accuracy of money instruments received.
  • Organize, process, and verify assigned batches, ensuring accuracy of item registration and performing necessary corrections.
  • Process and print identifying sequential numbers on all non-cash documents associated with each revenue item in the assigned batches.
  • Research, analyze, and coordinate payment discrepancies, auditing batched revenue items in accordance with established procedures.
  • Respond to inquiries from Department personnel and the general public regarding Central Cash Receiving procedures and documentation.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience performing complex clerical activities or handling cash instruments.
  • Proficiency with 10-key calculator, data entry, computers, and common software, e.g. word processing, spreadsheets, databases required.
  • Working knowledge of TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to exercise poise, tact, and diplomacy in professional relationships.
  • Organizational skills to prioritize in a multi-demand environment and meet deadlines without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Ability to construct and deliver clear, concise, and professional presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly access relevant information and present research conclusions clearly.
  • Analytical reasoning skills to examine data, discern variations, and identify trends.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.

Nice-to-haves

  • Supplemental college course work in accounting and/or knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and procedures affecting the maintenance of accounting records and automated accounting systems.
  • State Accounting System/USAS experience.
