About the position

The Custodian position at the Texas Department of Public Safety involves performing moderately complex custodial work in assigned areas, ensuring cleanliness and maintenance of department buildings and premises. The role requires general supervision and allows for some initiative and independent judgment. The custodian will be responsible for various cleaning tasks, equipment maintenance, and may also train others in custodial practices.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows, light fixtures, and carpet.
  • Perform restroom maintenance, replenish supplies, and apply cleaning chemicals as appropriate.
  • Clean office furniture, walls, and windows; empty trash; and clean offices in entirety.
  • Clean, dust, and disinfect areas such as restrooms, offices, and other facilities.
  • Perform carpet maintenance and care.
  • Clean drapes, upholstery, and clean and repair venetian blinds and curtain rods.
  • Assist in moving furniture due to cleaning, office rearrangements, or special events.
  • Operate floor maintenance equipment, including buffers, strippers, vacuums, and extractors.
  • May perform minor equipment repair on custodial equipment.
  • May maintain and restock custodial supply closets.
  • May perform limited yard work including mowing, trimming shrubs, edging, pulling weeds, and cleaning courtyard areas.
  • Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum of six months of responsible work experience in cleaning methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.
  • Ability to adequately perform assigned custodial work and use modern electrical equipment such as floor maintenance machines and pressure washers.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and ability to learn new software/systems.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with SharePoint and CAPPS systems.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
