About the position

The Drafter/CAD Operator III is responsible for preparing complete sets of complex drawings or computer models that include multiple views, detail drawings, and assembly drawings. These drawings or models incorporate complex design features that necessitate considerable drafting skill to visualize and portray accurately. The role involves using mathematical formulas to draw land contours or compute weights, center of gravity, load capacities, dimensions, and quantities of materials. The Drafter/CAD Operator works from sketches, computer models, and verbal information provided by engineers, architects, or designers to determine the most appropriate views, detail drawings, and supplementary information needed to complete assignments. In this position, the operator selects required information from various sources, including computer programs, internet sites, precedents, manufacturers' catalogs, and technical guides. The operator is expected to independently resolve most problems encountered, although supervisors or design originators may suggest methods of approach or provide advice on unusually difficult problems. Typical assignments include preparing complete sets of drawings for test equipment from layouts, models, or sketches, which require several cross-sectional and subassembly drawings. The operator will also prepare drawings of printed circuit boards based on electronic schematics and manuals, as well as final construction drawings for various civil engineering projects such as floodgates, navigation locks, dams, and bridges. The Drafter/CAD Operator III must be proficient in using various drafting software, including AutoCAD, CATIA, CREO, Solidworks, Unigraphic, and Visio. A minimum of 5-10 years of drafting experience is required, along with an Associate's Degree in Drafting preferred. Additionally, the operator must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance, as the role may involve sensitive projects.
