About the position

McLaughlin Research Corporation is seeking a full-time Drafter/CAD Operator IV to join our Infrastructure Division and Facilities Branch at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, Newport Division. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in supporting various construction and facilities projects by preparing conceptual draft drawings based on data collected from informational meetings, existing condition drawings, and project request information provided as Government Furnished Information (GFI). This position requires a keen eye for detail and a strong understanding of drafting standards and practices. In this role, the Drafter/CAD Operator IV will be responsible for the preparation of conceptual draft drawings, which serve as the foundation for further project development. The candidate will also research estimated material costs using GFI and generate a Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) cost estimate for proposed projects. Additionally, the role involves creating draft construction drawings in a compatible AutoCAD format based on the conceptual draft drawings. The candidate will review construction product submittals provided as GFI to ensure compliance with Government-approved drawings and identify any discrepancies or non-conformance from the design drawings during site visits. It is essential to notify the Project Engineer of any identified discrepancies or non-conformance with as-builts from the Government-approved submittals and drawings. This position is contingent on contract award, and the ideal candidate will have a strong background in drafting and design, particularly in the context of construction and renovation projects.

Responsibilities

  • Preparation of conceptual draft drawings
  • Researching estimated material costs utilizing GFI and generating a Rough Order of Magnitude (ROM) cost estimate for proposed projects
  • Creating draft construction drawings in a compatible AutoCAD format based on conceptual draft drawings
  • Reviewing construction product submittals provided as GFI to validate compliance with Government approved drawings
  • Identifying submittal discrepancies or non-conformance from the design drawings on the day of the finding
  • Notifying Project Engineer of any identified discrepancies or non-conformance with as-builts from the Government approved submittals and drawings during site visits

Requirements

  • Associates Degree in Drafting, Design, Illustrating or Graphics Arts from an accredited institution (Experience will be considered in lieu of degree)
  • Demonstrated 7 years of experience with drafting or project experience working with design renovation projects utilizing current construction and building standards
  • Ability to create and modify drawings from engineers
