About the position

The Drafter/CAD Operator role involves using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) software to prepare and edit complex drawing packages, including various types of diagrams and assembly drawings. The position requires a high level of drafting skill to visualize and accurately portray design features, while also applying mathematical formulas for calculations related to materials and dimensions. The Drafter/CAD Operator will work closely with engineers and designers to determine the necessary views and details for assignments, and will independently resolve most drafting-related problems.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare or edit complex drawing packages using CAD software.
  • Create multiple views, connection or wiring diagrams, assembly drawings, and elevations.
  • Use mathematical formulas to compute weights, load capacities, dimensions, and quantities of materials.
  • Determine appropriate views and details from sketches and verbal information provided by engineers or designers.
  • Select required information from precedents, manufacturers' catalogs, and technical guides.
  • Independently resolve drafting problems, seeking supervisor or designer advice for unusually difficult issues.
  • Prepare a variety of drawings and sketches using multiple drafting techniques.
  • Utilize terminal operator's layout drafting level and data entry methods appropriate to the CAD system.
  • Exercise judgment in the selection and use of appropriate drafting practices and specifications.
  • Prepare drawings of electrical schematics and connection diagrams from rough sketches or design information.
  • Develop layouts and drawings of complex items and assemblies within established weight and dimensional limits.
  • Estimate drafting time/cost requirements and manage project time/cost as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Experience with Solidworks, Draftsite, and PDM.
  • High School diploma or 2 years of appropriate technical training and 5 years of related experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity and experience with DoD and/or other federal agency drawing standards.
