About the position

This position at Horizon Telcom, Inc. is primarily remote, based out of Columbus, Ohio, with potential on-site visits as needed. The Drafter will respond to field engineering requests from various sources, including zone supervisors, engineering supervisors, engineering managers, outside developers, and government agencies. The role involves developing construction work orders and job prints necessary for construction projects, as well as maintaining and updating plant records. The Drafter will also create and maintain digital mapping databases using programs such as 3-GIS, ESRI, AutoCAD, and NISC-iVue, which are essential for the company's operations. In addition to these responsibilities, the Drafter will assist in the successful deployment of services for installation and construction projects. This includes coordinating activities with construction crews, preparing maps, diagrams, and drawings for installation routes, and consulting with construction crew leaders on the feasibility of proposed routes and procedures during the design stage of projects. The Drafter will also be responsible for assembling and entering mapping information into various digital mapping programs, preparing drafts and sketches, and generating staking sheets with detailed information for construction crews. The role requires effective communication with construction crews and other departments to ensure a common understanding of network design and to clarify engineering requests. The Drafter will also conduct research for records and ensure proper utility locating by contacting relevant utilities. Overall, this position plays a crucial role in supporting the company's goals and objectives related to fiber services installations and on-time delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to field engineering requests from various sources.
  • Develop construction work orders and job prints necessary for construction projects.
  • Maintain and update plant records as necessary.
  • Create and maintain digital mapping databases using programs like 3-GIS, ESRI, AutoCAD, and NISC-iVue.
  • Assist in the successful deployment of services for installation and construction projects.

  • Coordinate and ensure proper utility locating by contacting OUPS and/or other utilities.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Engineering, Drafting, Geography, or G.I.S. or two years previous engineering-drafting and design experience required.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Drafting, Geography, or G.I.S. preferred.
  • Previous Telcom drafting and design experience preferred.
  • Skilled in drafting or drawing including knowledge of Visio, MapCom, 3-GIS, AutoCAD.
  • Skilled in operating personal computer, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and various software packages.
  • Skilled in complex Geo-databases, IT Skills, Problem Solving, Detail oriented.
  • Ability to communicate with employees and various business contacts in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprint drawings.
  • Ability to apply mathematical concepts such as probability, statistical inferences, ratios, proportions, percentages, and fractions to practical situations.
  • Knowledge of telecommunications industry policies and procedures and basic Telcom Standards.
  • Knowledge of engineering practices and principles.
