About the position

The Drainage Inspector serves as a key member of the Surveyor's department, responsible for investigating drainage problems and overseeing drain repair, reconstruction, and maintenance projects. This part-time position requires a strong understanding of drainage regulations and the ability to work independently while managing various tasks related to drainage systems. The role involves significant outdoor work, including inspections and interactions with property owners, as well as administrative duties such as managing contracts and preparing reports.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates regulated and private drainage problems and complaints.
  • Oversees repair of regulated drains, including preparing work orders.
  • Investigates and responds to hazardous material spills involving regulated drains.
  • Reports encroachments of regulated drain easements and violations of related standards.
  • Installs and maintains regulated drain and filter strip markers.
  • Assists developers, contractors, engineers, and the public in researching drainage information.
  • Researches and interprets various County records to determine property lines and easements.
  • Manages drain maintenance contracts and prepares bid and contract documents.
  • Coordinates pre-construction phase of drain reconstruction projects.
  • Inspects reconstruction projects for compliance with codes and specifications.
  • Mows regulated drains annually and maintains related records.
  • Assists survey crews and gathers data for department projects.
  • Attends all Drainage Board meetings and presents items as assigned.
  • Updates GIS mapping from GPS field observations.
  • Maintains current knowledge of drainage regulations and technology.

Requirements

  • Baccalaureate Degree in surveying, civil engineering, construction, or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of construction experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Working knowledge of federal, state, and local regulations regarding drainage.
  • Ability to read and interpret detailed prints, sketches, and construction plans.
  • Ability to compile data, prepare reports, and operate various office equipment.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Possession of a valid Indiana driver's license and demonstrated safe driving record.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GIS mapping and GPS technology.
  • Familiarity with hydraulic and civil engineering principles.
  • Previous experience in a governmental or public service role.
