The Drawing Operator II position at Southwire Company, LLC is a medium skill role that involves coordinating, setting up, and operating the drawing machine to produce various sizes of copper wire from feeder stock. The operator will be responsible for ensuring that the machine runs correctly, producing wire of the specified sizes and lengths as outlined in production orders. This role requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and the ability to read, write, and speak English; bilingual skills in Spanish are considered a plus. The operator must be physically capable of standing and lifting heavy loads for extended periods, with the ability to lift up to 45 lbs. In this role, the operator will be tasked with the setup and operation of a multiwire drawing machine, ensuring that the correct wire sizes and lengths are produced on the appropriate take-up packages. Responsibilities include loading and unloading bobbins and reels, making necessary changes to pay-off bobbins and take-up reels, and performing high-quality hot-welds and kold-welds in the feeder stock to maintain continuous operation. The operator will also be responsible for maintaining a layer wound package, managing inventory of work-in-progress (WIP) tags, and ensuring proper die setups. The operator must measure wire after various dies to ensure the desired reduction is achieved and string up all wires correctly to ensure a properly constructed take-up package. Monitoring and adjusting machine controls to produce quality wire at specified production speeds is essential, as is checking the concentration of drawing solution and diagnosing problems with feeder stock. Coordination with lift drivers for material handling is necessary to ensure a continuous production process. The operator will also measure elongation of each wire on each take-up package to ensure proper annealing and must string up dies for wire-size changeovers and breakouts. Quality control is a critical aspect of this role, as the operator will use the company's ISO Quality System documentation to guide daily quality activities, perform quality checks, and report any issues immediately. Safety is paramount, and the operator is expected to observe Southwire's safety rules and maintain good housekeeping practices. The physical demands of the job include various activities such as balance, climbing, lifting, and repetitive motions, and the operator must be able to work in hot and cold environments typical of a prefabricated building without climate control.
