About the position

This is a strategic leadership position to serve as a Discipline Leader (DL) for Drinking Water Projects in our Drinking Water Community of Practice (COP). The DL will assist in developing creative approaches to the design and delivery of drinking water projects in the Southeast Region during both the pursuit and delivery phases of projects. The role also involves working with the Drinking Water COP to enhance the firm's technical luminescence in the industry, which may include engaging in professional society committees and developing paper abstracts or journal articles on water treatment technology trends. As a strategic member of the CDM Smith team, the DL will have direct access to various global subject matter experts (SMEs) skilled in environmental engineering, process mechanical modeling and design, civil engineering, structural engineering, mechanical engineering, and other engineering specialties to support the design of Drinking Water Treatment projects. The DL will collaborate with Practice Leaders (PLs), other DLs, and engineering and construction leaders across the organization to deliver innovative solutions while effectively interacting with clients, company management, administrators, project engineers, and vendors. Main responsibilities include performing and coordinating with designated SMEs for quality checking of designs for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, ensuring that firm policies and practices are followed on all designs. The DL will provide guidance and coordinate with SMEs on the delivery of water treatment projects, including coordination with regional team leaders (RTLs) on project staffing needs. Additionally, the DL will collaborate with the Drinking Water Practice Leader and sales staff to support proposals in response to requests for Proposals (RFPs), reviewing draft proposals for adherence to regulations and best practices, and meeting with current and potential future clients to discuss their design needs. The DL will also attend and present at conferences and symposia to contribute to the technical visibility of the firm's products and services, and provide technical guidance and training to staff, mentoring them for future growth within the discipline and firm.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and coordinate with designated SMEs for quality checking of designs for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Ensure that firm policies and practices are followed on all designs.
  • Provide guidance and coordinate with SMEs on the delivery of water treatment projects, including coordination with regional team leaders on project staffing needs.
  • Collaborate with the Drinking Water Practice Leader and sales staff to support proposals in response to requests for Proposals (RFPs).
  • Review draft proposals for adherence to firm, industry, state, local and federal regulations, and best practices.
  • Meet with current and potential future clients to review their current and future design needs.
  • Attend and present at conferences, symposia, etc. to contribute to the technical luminescence and visibility of the firm's products and services.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to senior, mid-level and junior staff as needed.
  • Mentor staff and develop them for future growth within the discipline and firm.
  • Supervise the work of engineers on project work and delegate as necessary to SMEs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil, Environmental or Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
  • Professional engineering (PE) license.
  • 12 years of related experience.
  • Expert knowledge of computer assisted design and drafting (CADD) 3D and 4D software and practices.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles of design.
  • Expert knowledge of Microsoft business software (Excel, Word, etc.).
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Expert knowledge of federal, state and local regulations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Alternative delivery experience such as progressive design build is a plus.
