About the position

The Forensic Scientist-1 position at the Department of Health involves performing forensic analysis of biological samples in criminal and death investigations. The role is critical in ensuring public safety by analyzing evidence related to criminal cases and providing expert testimony in court. The incumbent will work in an ABFT certified laboratory, utilizing advanced testing methods to determine the presence of substances in samples collected by law enforcement.

Responsibilities

  • Perform forensic analysis of biological samples related to criminal and death investigations.
  • Conduct tests for the presence of alcohol, drugs, and carbon monoxide in samples.
  • Prepare legally defensible reports from various analytical methods including LC-MS, ELISA, and GC-FID.
  • Provide factual and expert testimony in court regarding evidence and results.
  • Instruct on the preservation and storage of physical evidence.
  • Employ knowledge of courtroom protocol and rules of evidence.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology, or Forensic Science with a minimum of 20 credit hours in chemistry coursework.
  • Experience with Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography with Flame Ionization Detector.
  • Experience handling biological samples and/or drugs of abuse.
  • Ability to provide testimony in a court of law.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in forensic toxicology.
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
