About the position

The DSHS ALTSA Communications Manager plays a crucial role in enhancing communication strategies for the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) and the Aging and Long-Term Support Administration (ALTSA). This position involves leading a team of six, overseeing the development and execution of internal and external communications, and ensuring alignment with DSHS's mission to support individuals in accessing care and resources. The role requires a blend of strategic oversight, team leadership, and hands-on communication skills to effectively convey the department's initiatives and services.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and lead a Communications Team of six.
  • Develop and administer communication strategies for ALTSA's work.
  • Create and oversee written communication and talking points for senior management.
  • Lead the creation and coordination of multimedia communications for ALTSA HQ.
  • Participate in DSHS-wide communications activities.
  • Provide oversight on high-level communications and campaigns.
  • Recruit, hire, and collaborate with direct reports.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in community relations, communications, journalism, public administration, business administration, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in communications, journalism, or public relations.
  • At least 3 years of supervisory experience managing professional level positions in marketing and communications.
  • Advanced journalism, public relations, marketing, and digital communications skills.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite applications such as InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Deep understanding of equity, diversity, access, inclusion, and belonging principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Working knowledge of long-term care terminology.
  • Experience with state and federal Medicaid laws, regulations, and policies related to long-term care Medicaid programs.
  • Understanding of DSHS and the political climate affecting communication.
