About the position

The District Supervisor-Maintenance is responsible for overseeing the installation and maintenance of water distribution systems, including water mains, valves, and related infrastructure. This role involves training and directing employees, managing departmental budgets, coordinating with various agencies, and ensuring compliance with safety and technical standards. The supervisor will also handle customer complaints, oversee contractors, and maintain a performance-oriented culture within the team.

Responsibilities

  • Train and direct employees in installing and maintaining water mains, valves, services, meter boxes, and vaults.
  • Assist in preparing the department's annual budget and monitor budget irregularities.
  • Manage departmental costs and organize work assignments for crews.
  • Coordinate work with other departments and officials.
  • Schedule and assign machinery and equipment for efficient use.
  • Inspect job sites for potential utility interferences before job assignments.
  • Review and address customer complaints regarding service issues.
  • Identify and recommend changes affecting design, cost, and policy.
  • Assist with relocating facilities for construction projects.
  • Review and verify accuracy of job-related documentation and reports.
  • Oversee contractors and authorize construction activities during on-call situations.
  • Estimate construction project costs and ensure compliance with standards.
  • Inspect completed work for proper installation and adherence to specifications.
  • Maintain a clean and operational vehicle, reporting mechanical issues as needed.
  • Adhere to traffic laws and safety policies while driving company vehicles.
  • Work on an on-call rotating schedule and extended hours as needed.
  • Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and laws.
  • Interview, hire, and train employees; manage performance and resolve issues.
  • Champion a performance-oriented culture and develop key performance measurements.
  • Ensure safe work practices and compliance with safety standards.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive employee information.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Valid CDL class A preferred or ability to obtain within 18 months of employment.
  • ADEM Grade I Certification required, or ability to obtain in 6 months.
  • Qualified Credentialed Inspector (QCI) Certification required, or ability to obtain in 6 months.
  • Six (6) years of construction and maintenance experience required.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory-related experience required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of BWW leadership development programs may count towards supervisory experience.
