About the position

Your role at GEI. GEI's West Region is seeking a motivated, experienced Project Manager/Coordinator (PM/PMC) to work in GEI's Integrated Water Management (IWM) Group, and other assigned practice area(s), with a multi-disciplined water resources focused professional team. This position will support GEI's PM/PMC team for one of GEI's premier clients, the California Department of Water Resources (DWR) - Division of Engineering (DOE). In this role you will serve as a PM/PMC to DOE supporting a range of complex and critical projects throughout California. These projects include but are not limited to, dams, spillways, levees, pipelines, pump stations, canals, wells, geological investigations, habitat restorations, and groundwater recharge facilities. This position reports to the Water Resources Practice Leader (within GEI's IWM Group) and may sit in any of our California offices (Sacramento, Oakland, Bakersfield, Pasadena, or Carlsbad). This successful job candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills and abilities that align with GEI's culture. This position will collaborate with a GEI and DOE team of experienced water resources project managers and coordinators. In this role you will be exposed to and develop expertise in the following areas: PPM/RM planning tool used to budget and resource projects. In order to execute these projects, you will develop an understanding of how each project is funded (i.e., State Water Project funded, federal funded, extraordinary funded due to an emergency, etc.) Collaboration with variety of DWR Divisions, Field Offices, DOE Branches, and Regulatory agencies and how each one is organized and operates. You'll learn the inner workings of how water and water resource infrastructure is planned and managed throughout California. A variety of project types including geological fault line investigations, geomatic surveys, habitat restoration, bathymetric surveys, electrical infrastructure, seal and pavement improvements, roof replacements, water quality stations, pipeline/conveyance related projects, and well related projects. These types of projects are located on or near dams, spillways, levees, pipelines, pump stations, canals, wells, and groundwater recharge facilities, etc. Software tools such as Microsoft (MS) Teams, excel, MS Project, Word, OneNote, BlueBeam Revu. Leadership in facilitating both small and large meetings; Document control/management and organization skills of meetings, correspondence, and deliverables; and client development and relationship building with your project team. The ideal candidate for this position will build upon their project management, coordination, and communication skills and expand their knowledge in other areas that could service geotechnical, geological, and water resources clients. This position requires full-time dedication to GEI's PM/PMC team for DWR's DOE Project Management Coordination Program. Once the term of this assignment is fulfilled, the skills developed during the assignment will enable you to transition into a project management or related position with other GEI projects and clients.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a project manager and participant coordinator by facilitating, resourcing, and delivering DOE Branch services requested by other Divisions within DWR.
  • Facilitate DOE PM/PMC project process life cycle from taking an initial project request by a Division of DWR through design and construction completion milestones.
  • Develop agendas, coordinate, and memorialize routine project team meetings as well as agency meetings.
  • Develop and maintain project controls and project management plan.
  • Develop project schedules to achieve desirable client milestones and deliverables; close projects out following construction completion.
  • Develop budgets, resource loading and leveling.
  • Organize and memorialize various meetings.
  • Complete other project related, and technical duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Minimum of B.S. degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or related field.
  • 5+ years' of progressively responsible experience in water resources planning and management, engineering and/or construction services with at least 2+ years in a project management or project coordinator role.
  • Demonstrated ability to support Federal, State, and local agencies in the western United States.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage complex projects/programs.
  • Eager to learn and be self-sufficient in executing a DOE PM/PMC project with support from the internal GEI and DOE project team members.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, writing, team leadership, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong capability to work remotely and independently while maintaining productivity and motivation.
  • Familiarity with MS Office, MS Project, and other typical project management and project coordination related software.
  • Valid U.S. driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experienced Project Manager/Coordinator for water resources projects in California, such as dams, spillways, levees, pipelines, pump stations, canals, wells, Water/Wastewater treatment facilities and/or groundwater recharge facilities.
  • California Registered Civil Engineer, Project Manager Professional Certification and/or advanced management degree.
