The Engineering Assistant I, II, III position at the Texas Department of Transportation involves performing engineering work related to design, construction, inspection, maintenance, surveying, and transportation operations. The role is designed for individuals actively pursuing engineering licensing and includes job rotation, training, and continuing education. The position requires collaboration with local governmental representatives and engineering contractors, with supervision from a licensed professional engineer.

Responsibilities

  • Perform research and problem solving of engineering-related problems.
  • Review construction plans prepared by consultants.
  • Review/design and detail bridge and structural elements.
  • Prepare for professional engineering licensing/registration through appropriate training and exams.
  • Apply engineering principles, methods, and techniques to a variety of bridge structures.
  • Participate in Career Development for Engineering Assistants, including job rotation and training.
  • Perform design computations and plan preparations for construction projects.
  • Conduct engineering-related calculations and drafting/design work.
  • Use automated structural design programs and computer-assisted design/engineering systems.
  • Perform advanced and specialized engineering design work for bridge structures (Engineering Assistant II).
  • Train less experienced engineering assistants, specialists, and technicians (Engineering Assistant III).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and practices.
  • Experience with design and construction processes.
  • Ability to use computer-aided design software.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
