About the position

The Texas Department of Transportation is seeking a Bridge Design Engineer at various levels (I, II, III, or IV) to perform bridge and structural engineering work in project development and design. The role involves ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, policies, and standards while engaging with governmental officials and private entities. The position requires varying levels of independence and complexity in engineering tasks, depending on the level of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Design moderately complex bridge projects and perform specialized design (Engineer I).
  • Review designs and detailed drawings of bridges and related structures prepared by other engineers and technicians (Engineer I).
  • Perform moderately complex structural analysis of bridge designs (Engineer I).
  • Assist in reviewing shop drawings prepared by fabricators for bridges and related structures (Engineer I).
  • Assist in the development of specifications for special bridge design details and projects (Engineer I).
  • Coordinate and/or monitor assigned projects/programs/plans (Engineer I).
  • Represent the division at various meetings and make presentations (Engineer I).
  • Design complex bridge projects and perform specialized design (Engineer II).
  • Perform complex structural analysis of bridge designs (Engineer II).
  • Represent the division at technical meetings and public hearings (Engineer II).
  • Train engineering staff (Engineer II).
  • Design highly complex bridge projects and perform specialized design (Engineer III).
  • Perform highly complex structural analysis of bridge designs (Engineer III).
  • Develop short-term and long-term goals and coordinate planning activities and resources (Engineer IV).
  • Coordinate and/or monitor consultant contracts related to projects (Engineer IV).
  • Develop specifications for special bridge design details and projects (Engineer IV).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or a related field.
  • Experience in bridge and structural engineering work.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines related to transportation engineering.
  • Ability to perform structural analysis and design of bridge projects.
  • Strong communication skills for interaction with governmental officials and private entities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with AutoCAD or similar design software.
  • Familiarity with project management principles.
  • Experience in training or mentoring junior engineers.
