About the position

The Deputy Bridge Engineer at the Texas Department of Transportation is responsible for supervising personnel involved in various transportation engineering tasks, particularly focusing on bridge design, construction, maintenance, and inspection. This role requires ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations while maintaining direct accountability for the work produced by the team. The position involves significant interaction with governmental officials, private entities, and contractors, and includes advising staff engineers and coordinating with area engineers on various projects.

Responsibilities

• Supervises personnel engaged in transportation engineering work areas such as design, construction, maintenance, and bridge inspection.
• Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines.
• Advises staff engineers on engineering matters.
• Assists districts with bridge inspection-related issues.
• Coordinates maintenance matters with Area Engineers.
• Coordinates with area engineers on design and plan preparation.
• Designs, sketches, and recommends bridge repair procedures.
• Establishes, modifies, or interprets applicable standards, rules, methods, procedures, practices, and policies.
• Oversees and performs bridge structural evaluations/analyses of structures.
• Inspects bridges that have appraisal and condition ratings or are recommended for closure.
• Participates in district plan review activities.
• Performs bridge inspections in response to emergencies.
• Prepares correspondence and reports related to bridge engineering.
• Rates and monitors load carrying capacities of bridges.
• Represents the Department at meetings, conferences, and related activities.
• Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Experience in transportation engineering, particularly in bridge design and inspection.
• Knowledge of federal and state laws related to transportation and bridge engineering.
• Ability to supervise and coordinate engineering teams effectively.
• Strong communication skills for interaction with governmental officials and contractors.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with emergency bridge inspections.
• Familiarity with bridge repair procedures and standards.
