About the position

This opportunity involves providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in both the public and private sectors. The role includes basic assistance with research, design, concept development, and construction of various structures such as roads, buildings, tunnels, dams, bridges, water supply systems, and sewage treatment facilities. The position requires generating accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project, ensuring that responsibilities are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. As a Full-Time Early Career Civil Engineer in our Chicago, IL office, you will be involved in projects with our Transportation Team, contributing to a growing organization that meets client objectives and solves their challenges. Under general supervision, you will assist in collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction. You will also perform basic professional civil engineering work, conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to ensure compliance with applicable rules, standards, and permits. Your responsibilities will include performing routine engineering functions and providing entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements and operating strategies to ensure the safety and functionality of end-users, systems, and infrastructure. You will assist in verifying site characteristics and providing basic technical assistance on engineering, design, and construction issues. Additionally, you will generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebooks/logs, while complying with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures. Completing training on assigned tasks and exercising responsible decision-making regarding company resources will also be part of your role. You may be required to perform additional responsibilities as needed by business demands.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, and other matrices for project development.
  • Conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions to ensure compliance with applicable rules and standards.

  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures during project execution.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Exercise responsible decision-making regarding company funds and resources.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with design/build processes and concepts.
  • Knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail and ability to prioritize responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing and office automation tools.

Nice-to-haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and specific engineering discipline.
