About the position

WSP is seeking an Early Career Civil Engineer to join our Jacksonville, FL location. In this role, you will be involved in providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in both the public and private sectors. Your tasks will include basic assistance with research, design, concept development, and construction of various infrastructure elements such as roads, culvert crossings, stormwater collection and conveyance systems, stormwater management systems, and sewage/septic systems. You will be responsible for generating accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project, ensuring that all responsibilities are delivered with a level of quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality. Under general supervision, you will assist in collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, geotechnical data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction. You will perform basic professional civil engineering work, including conducting research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, resources, infrastructure, and transportation channels to ensure compliance with applicable rules, standards, and construction or operating permits. Additionally, you will generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, drawings, and field/work site notebooks/logs, while complying with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures. As part of your role, you will also complete training on assigned tasks and exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures. You may be required to perform additional responsibilities as needed by business demands.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with collecting, compiling, and analyzing data from physical work sites, surveys, blueprints, GIS data, and other matrices for project development, design, and construction.
  • Perform basic professional civil engineering work relating to research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions and infrastructure.
  • Provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements and operating strategies to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebooks/logs.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures, including statistical documentation and engineering studies.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with design/build processes and concepts.
  • Knowledge of relevant civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills for effective interaction with engineering and non-engineering audiences.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail and ability to prioritize responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and compliance with health, safety, and drug/alcohol policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.

Nice-to-haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, HY-8, ICPR).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and specific engineering discipline.
  • Membership in local professional practice organizations.
  • Familiarity with solar energy facility civil design.
