About the position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a full-time, Early Career Civil Transportation Engineer for our Tacoma, WA office. This position involves engaging in projects with our Pacific Mountain West Transportation Engineering Team, contributing to a growing organization that meets client objectives and solves challenges. The role includes providing local technical assistance for the design, development, and construction of infrastructure projects and systems in both the public and private sectors. Responsibilities may encompass basic assistance with research, design, concept development, and construction of transportation civil infrastructure. The engineer will work collaboratively with a team to generate accurate and concise documentation regarding assigned aspects of the project, ensuring that the work product meets acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.

Responsibilities

  • Assist and support design teams in the execution of project delivery
  • Provide technical input during various stages of project, including preliminary design, final design and contract documentation including cost estimates and specifications
  • Perform basic design tasks and drawings using computer-aided design (CADD) to develop conceptual transportation projects in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, InRoads/OpenRoads and/or MicroStation
  • Perform standard computations and analysis
  • Discuss and propose solutions to technical issues
  • Collect data and gather information or documents
  • Attend design meetings and coordinate with team members
  • Develop memorandums and other written technical documents
  • Maintain positive team relationships
  • Assist and coordinate with key staff across disciplines (i.e. drainage, structures) as required
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, software, technology, and tools including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Uphold workplace safety and abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads).
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
