About the position

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Full-Time Early Career Mechanical Engineer for our Chicago, IL office. Be involved in projects with our Property & Buildings Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our clients' objectives and solves their challenges. Take part in the conceptualization and design of a wide array of building types, from healthcare to skyscrapers, airports to universities, historical renovations to the cutting edge in computing technology. Join our local team to serve projects and teams from across the country to solve challenging problems and minimize energy consumption. This position will provide exposure to all aspects of design, with training in mechanical design and drafting, building energy modeling, facility assessments and planning studies. Engineers will be put on real-world projects quickly, and work on the full range of project execution from concept to construction administration. Eclectic and diverse work and school experiences are welcomed, as are leadership positions in student or professional organizations. This is a hybrid position, with in-office attendance for training and mentoring strongly encouraged up to 3 times per week. As skills and duties progress, some regional travel may be required for site visits and client meetings.

Responsibilities

  • Support and complete design and load calculations under supervision.
  • Draft designs in AutoCAD and Revit.
  • Perform construction administration tasks.
  • Conduct research and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions, equipment, resources, and mechanical systems.
  • Provide entry-level technical assistance on various design requirements and load calculations.
  • Generate complete, accurate, and concise documentation and specifications using electronic systems and drawings.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree program.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post education experience.
  • Excellent research skills with analytical mindset.
  • Familiarity with process and concepts for design/build.
  • Familiarity with relevant mechanical system and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities.
  • Ability to work independently under general supervision, as well as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Familiarity with discipline-specific design software (i.e., AutoCAD, CAM).
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Recent graduate (May 2024 or later) from an accredited Architectural or Mechanical Engineering program.
  • Master's degree in Architectural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related degree program.
  • Engineer in Training Certification.
  • Prior internship related to the degree of study and the specific engineering discipline.
  • A member of and/or actively participate in local professional practice organizations.
