About the position

Welcome to TEACH-LA: Building the Future of Early Childhood Education! TEACH-LA is a groundbreaking workforce development initiative designed to foster the growth of the Early Childhood workforce in Los Angeles County. Our program focuses on preparing educators to teach and nurture children between the ages of 18 months and 4 years old. By providing educational opportunities, on-the-job work experience, and a supportive community, TEACH-LA empowers aspiring teachers to make a meaningful impact on the lives of young learners. The Substitute Teacher will be under general supervision of assigned locations and will deliver high-quality Early Childhood Development services to children enrolled in programs, including educational, social, physical, nutritional, and psychological development of children under their care. The role involves communicating with parents on their child's individual progress and maintaining records of attendance and educational achievement. The Substitute Teacher is responsible for planning lessons, serving meals, and ensuring a healthy and safe learning environment for children.

Responsibilities

  • Implement daily classroom lesson plans in accordance with curriculum plan.
  • Supervise children while at the site.
  • Conduct/Support/Assist with safety checks and ensure a safe learning environment.
  • Prepare breakfast and serve prepared meals for children.
  • Clean and sanitize food areas (including dishwashing as needed).
  • Help children practice good hygiene, including personal cleanliness and diapering, as needed.
  • Plan and execute classroom lessons and activities for children.
  • Conduct/Support/Assist with learning and developmental assessments of children.
  • Organize and lead physical education activities for children.
  • Serve as an interpreter for parents who do not speak English.
  • Conduct/support/assist teacher-parent conferences and home visits, if necessary.
  • Maintain records of enrollment, attendance, achievement and other required paperwork, both manual and digital.
  • Schedule, support, and follow through with the developmental screening and ongoing assessment of infants' and toddlers' motor, language, social, cognitive, perceptual, and emotional skills.
  • Organize and maintain instructional and program supplies.
  • Set up classrooms for various purposes and take down classrooms at shared use sites.
  • Perform diaper changing for children as needed.
  • Prep meals for Family Style meal service as needed.
  • Supervise Teacher Assistants and provide performance feedback and coaching to aid their development.

Requirements

  • Minimum 1 year experience as a pre-school teacher, aide or assistant, preferably in a Head Start program.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Must show proof of Department of Justice clearance to work with children prior to the start of employment.
  • Livescan must be associated with California Community Care Licensing.
  • Child Development Associate Teacher Permit or higher preferred.
  • Associate's Degree or higher with at least 12 semester units with a permit in Early Childhood Education; 3 units in Infant and Toddler highly preferred but not required.
  • CPR/1ST Aid Certificate.
  • Valid California Driver's License and proof of auto insurance.
  • Proof of Department of Justice clearance (Fingerprints/Livescan) to work with children prior to the start of employment.
