About the position

The EC General Curriculum Teacher is responsible for providing special education services to students with disabilities who are following the general curriculum. This role involves developing and implementing Individual Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to each student's needs, adapting lesson plans, and creating activities that promote academic, behavioral, and social skills. The teacher monitors student progress and maintains compliance with state and federal regulations regarding special education.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement instructional plans compatible with school and system-wide curricular goals and students' IEPs.
  • Create and update Individual Education Programs (IEPs) for students with disabilities based on diagnostic information.
  • Provide direct special education instruction to identified students using various teaching methods.
  • Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline, and deescalate inappropriate behaviors.
  • Assist students with personal and self-help needs such as eating and toileting.
  • Communicate with parents regarding their children's educational progress through written reports.
  • Act as a case coordinator, consulting with caregivers, school support professionals, and parents.
  • Maintain student records in compliance with state and federal education statutes.
  • Treat all students fairly and interact effectively with students, co-workers, parents, and the community.
  • Engage in professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.

Requirements

  • Degree in special education and certification in general curriculum by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
  • Ability to monitor the safety and well-being of students during inclusive activities.
  • Ability to motivate students and maintain a clean and orderly environment.
  • Ability to perform general clerical duties and maintain order in the classroom.
  • Ability to operate common office machines and maintain basic files and records.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with adaptive teaching methods for students with disabilities.
  • Familiarity with community resources for special education support.
  • Skills in conflict resolution and behavior management.
