About the position

The Long-Term Guest Teacher Substitute (non-certified) plays a crucial role in maintaining a safe, orderly, and positive classroom environment in the absence of the regularly assigned teacher. This position is designed for individuals who can effectively manage a classroom and provide instruction based on lesson plans provided by the absent teacher, the principal, or those created at the grade or department level. The substitute teacher will be assigned to a specific building for the entire school year, filling in for teacher absences as directed by the principal. This role requires adherence to Board of Education policies and procedures related to classroom instruction and student supervision, all under the guidance of the principal. In this position, the substitute teacher will be responsible for studying and following the curriculum and lesson plans provided, applying various teaching techniques to encourage student participation, and preparing educational materials. The substitute will also assign classwork and homework, take attendance, grade assignments, and provide constructive feedback to students. It is essential for the substitute to report any incidents regarding student behavior, injuries, or breaches of the district's Code of Student Conduct to the school administration promptly. The role also involves creating an inclusive environment with positive communication and participating in grade-level meetings and other committees typically assigned to regular classroom teachers. The Long-Term Guest Teacher Substitute must possess the ability to maintain professional and emotional control under stress, communicate effectively, and employ positive communication skills in all settings. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding school system business. The substitute teacher will also need to take initiative, work independently, and exercise sound judgment in various situations.

Responsibilities

  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures
  • Study and follow the curriculum and lesson plan as provided by the absent teacher or the principal
  • Effectively manage the classroom and provide instruction for students based on teacher provided lesson plans, school provided lesson plans, or grade/department level created plans aligned to curriculum
  • Apply various teaching techniques (including interactive methods and game-based activities) to encourage participation and facilitate learning
  • Prepare educational materials, such as notes, exercises and additional resources
  • Assign classwork and homework
  • Take attendance according to school policy
  • Grade students' assignments and provide constructive feedback
  • Report any incidents regarding students' behavior in and out of the classroom
  • Report all student injuries, accidents, illnesses, or any breach of the district's Code of Student Conduct to the school administration as soon as possible
  • Establish and maintain a safe and orderly learning environment
  • Oversee school equipment and ensure students use it properly
  • Participate in grade-level meetings, faculty meetings, student intervention teams and other committees normally assigned to the regular classroom teacher
  • Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly
  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication
  • Perform related work as assigned or required

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • Associate degree OR two years of higher education equivalent to 48 credit hours
  • Ability to pass a formal assessment (ACT Workkeys and 96 hours) required
  • Equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Possess and maintain a valid Driver's License or ability to provide own transportation
  • Minimum age 21 years old
