About the position

The ECE Instructional Assistant position at Wellington Elementary School is designed to support the educational needs of students with disabilities. This role is integral to the Exceptional Child Education (ECE) program, which aims to provide a high-quality education tailored to the unique learning approaches of students with disabilities. The instructional assistant will work closely with teachers to implement each student's individual education plan (IEP), ensuring that the learning environment is pleasant, safe, and structured. The assistant will display a willingness and aptitude to work with students who have a range of disabilities, including but not limited to Moderate to Severe Disabilities (MSD), Mild Mental Disabilities (MMD), Other Health Impairments (OHI), Emotional Behavioral Disabilities (EBD), Autism (AUT), Visual Impairment (VI), Hearing Impairment (HI), Learning Disabilities (LD), and Social Communication challenges. The position requires a commitment to fostering an inclusive atmosphere where all students can thrive. The instructional assistant will assist in various classroom activities, support students in their physical needs, and help maintain a structured learning environment. The role may involve changes in assignment or ECE designation based on the evolving needs of students and the classroom throughout the school year. The school district emphasizes the importance of professional growth, and the instructional assistant will be expected to attend district ECE in-service training sessions to enhance their skills and knowledge in working with students with disabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in implementing each student's individual education plan (IEP).
  • Help establish and maintain a pleasant, safe, and structured learning environment.
  • Display willingness and aptitude to work with students with disabilities.
  • Support students in their physical needs, including positioning, toileting, and lifting.
  • Assist in various classroom activities and instructional methods tailored to students with disabilities.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Passing score on the Kentucky Paraeducator Exam (KPA) or 48 college semester hours.
  • Willingness and aptitude to work with students with disabilities.
  • Physical ability and willingness to assist with physical needs of students.
  • Effective communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in a classroom setting.
  • Knowledge of Exceptional Child Education programs and techniques.
