About the position

The Ecologist position at the Wyoming-Montana Water Science Center involves planning, organizing, and implementing studies related to biological, ecological, and physical processes affecting plant communities and ecosystems. The role includes providing technical assistance, conducting research, managing field data, and representing the USGS in various professional settings. This is a full-time, permanent position with a salary range of $59,966 to $77,955, depending on experience and qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and implement studies concerning biological, ecological, and physical processes affecting ecosystems.
  • Provide technical assistance and scientific advice for research projects.
  • Conduct studies on modeling spatial relationships between restoration treatment factors, ecosystem properties, climate, and biodiversity.
  • Coordinate and provide logistical support for technicians in the field.
  • Order and maintain technical field equipment.
  • Manage field datasets and geospatial data.
  • Interpret topographic maps and aerial photographs, and utilize GPS and ArcMap.
  • Compile and enter field data into electronic spreadsheets and database programs.
  • Represent the USGS in meetings, seminars, and symposia related to project work.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required.
  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research, including at least 30 semester hours in biological sciences, 9 hours in ecology, and 12 hours in physical and chemical sciences.
  • For GS-09 level: Two full years of progressively higher-level graduate education or a master's degree in ecology, biology, or a related field, or one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-7 level in the Federal service.
