About the position
The Economic Assistant position at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) is a part-time role focused on collecting and analyzing statistical data related to labor economics. The role involves visiting various retail and service establishments to gather price data for the Consumer Price Index, as well as conducting interviews with homeowners and renters. This position is not intended for those seeking full-time employment and requires flexibility in scheduling, including potential evening and weekend hours.
Responsibilities
- Visit retail and service establishments to collect retail price data.
- Conduct personal and telephone interviews with store managers, buyers, and other professionals.
- Collect data for the housing survey through personal visits or telephone interviews.
- Enter collected data using a handheld computer.
- Obtain voluntary cooperation from survey respondents.
- Travel to the Bureau of Labor Statistics training center for mandatory training sessions.
- Participate in on-the-job training and periodic meetings.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be at least 16 years old.
- Requires a valid driver's license and ability to drive in various conditions.
- 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level.
- Experience using personal computers for research or data collection.
- Cold-calling or public outreach experience.
- Interviewer or intake experience with record-keeping and public contact.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in data analysis or statistical reporting.
- Familiarity with economic principles and practices.
