About the position

The Economic Development Assistant Manager will support the management and coordination of the Economic Development Division in Pontiac, MI. This role involves overseeing various economic development functions, including business attraction and retention, site selection, and workforce development. The Assistant Manager will work closely with other city divisions and present information to the City Council and other committees. The position requires strong organizational and communication skills, as well as the ability to foster cooperative relationships within the community.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the management, coordination, and oversight of the Economic Development Division's functions and operations.
  • Retain existing businesses and attract new ones to the city.
  • Develop tools and strategies to grow the commercial base and create sustainable employment opportunities.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of economic development programs.
  • Review City Ordinances and propose amendments or new Ordinances as necessary.
  • Make presentations to City Council, commissions, civic groups, and the public on economic development issues.
  • Establish and maintain a database of existing city businesses and vacant properties.
  • Develop a business visitation program to assess business climate issues.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in architecture, business administration, economic development, political science, public administration, or a closely related field and at least three years' experience in relevant activities.
  • In lieu of a Master's degree, a Bachelor's degree in a related field and at least five years' experience in relevant activities is acceptable.
  • Valid Michigan Driver's License or the ability to obtain it at the time of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • Fluency in a second language is preferred.
