About the position

The ED Per Diem RN at Central Maine Medical Center is responsible for managing individualized direct patient care across various age groups, from pediatric to geriatric populations. The role emphasizes promoting and restoring patients' health through the nursing process, collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring exceptional patient experiences. The RN acts as a patient advocate, responding to changes in patient conditions and providing education and support to patients and their families throughout their hospitalization.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain nursing history, perform nursing assessments, and develop plans of care for patients.
  • Demonstrate ability to perform head-to-toe assessments on all patients and conduct reassessments as per policy.
  • Prioritize tasks effectively during high acuity situations.
  • Perform patient care responsibilities considering age-specific standards of care.
  • Administer medications correctly based on patient age and clinical condition, following the five medication rights.
  • Assist physicians with procedures and perform technical and manual skills as required.
  • Start peripheral IVs and care for post-surgical patients.
  • Treat patients and families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs.
  • Interact professionally with patients and families, providing appropriate care and information based on patient status.
  • Interpret data about patients' status to identify age-specific needs and provide necessary care.
  • Ensure patient safety and reduce the likelihood of medical errors during care.
  • Participate in performance improvement and CQI activities.
  • Consult with other health team members to provide an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • Communicate clearly with directors, nurse leaders, team leaders, nursing supervisors, co-workers, and providers.
  • Maintain good working relationships within and across departments.
  • Ensure documentation meets current standards and policies.
  • Manage and operate equipment safely and correctly.
  • Coordinate and supervise patient care as necessary.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under stress.
  • Maintain a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families according to hospital standards.
  • Enhance professional growth through participation in educational programs and workshops.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current Registered Nurse License in the state of Maine; BSN preferred.
  • Current certifications in ACLS, PALS, BLS, and NRP; TNCC desired.

Nice-to-haves
