About the position

The Acquisitions Editor for Philosophy and Political Theory at Harvard University Press is responsible for acquiring 10-15 new titles annually in the fields of philosophy and political theory. This role involves building a strong list of books that appeal to both scholars and the general public, while also managing relationships with authors and other publishing professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor innovative research in philosophy and political theory by establishing contacts with scholars and experts.
  • Read widely in the literature and attend professional conferences.
  • Travel to campuses throughout the United States to build a network of prospective authors and agents.
  • Commission new works of broad appeal and significance.
  • Solicit and evaluate proposals for trade books and research monographs.
  • Negotiate contracts on behalf of the Press.
  • Send manuscripts for peer review and work closely with authors to ensure quality and compliance with contractual obligations.
  • Write title information sheets and design briefs for new titles.
  • Present new books at marketing launch meetings and to the Press's faculty board.
  • Use industry-standard software to maintain records, update metadata, and track sales and inventory levels.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree required; advanced degree in philosophy or political theory strongly preferred.
  • 5 years of publishing experience required, including 2 years of book-acquisition experience.
  • Relevant qualifications such as advanced academic degrees or institutional appointments will be considered.
