Grand Central Publishing is expanding its fiction program and is seeking to hire an Editor. This role is pivotal in acquiring approximately 10-12 titles annually in the realm of commercial fiction, with a particular focus on book club fiction, romantasy, and fiction that incorporates romantic elements. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to identify emerging trends within the marketplace and will be responsible for publishing works from a diverse array of voices. The Editor will engage in the entire lifecycle of book production, which includes acquiring projects, negotiating contracts, editing manuscripts, and overseeing the books through the production process. This position is based in New York City, and the current hybrid working model requires employees to be in the office two days a week. The Editor will be tasked with acquiring projects from various sources, including agents, established authors with proven track records, and new authors. Building and maintaining productive relationships with authors, agents, and internal teams across departments such as Managing Editorial, Art, Publicity/Marketing, and Sales is essential. The role also involves handling departmental projects and initiatives, as well as representing the division at tradeshows and industry events when appropriate. To succeed in this role, the candidate must have a minimum of five years of experience in trade book acquiring and editing, along with proven editorial skills in shaping commercial fiction manuscripts. A solid understanding of the book publishing processes and functions—including Editorial, Managing Editorial, Production, Design, Copyediting, Marketing, Sales, and Publicity—and how these areas interface is crucial. The successful applicant will also need to stay informed about market trends, reader preferences, and competitor activities to effectively inform acquisitions and publishing strategies. Furthermore, the ability to thrive in a results-driven environment, possess a clear editorial vision, and demonstrate problem-solving skills in cross-functional team scenarios is essential. Excellent presentation, organization, and communication skills, both written and oral, are also required.
