About the position

As the Editor-in-Chief of Molecular Cell, you will take on a pivotal role in shaping the journal's editorial direction and scientific scope. This well-established journal, part of the Cell Press portfolio, focuses on broad molecular biology-relevant research and has been a leader in the field for decades. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the quality and quantity of research articles published, which involves building and leading a dynamic editorial team. You will also be tasked with refining and expanding the journal's strategic focus, establishing relationships with the advisory board, and managing the day-to-day operations of the journal. In this role, you will actively engage with the scientific community, reaching out to recruit exciting papers that align with the journal's scope. Collaboration will be key, as you will work closely with production, marketing, and advertising teams, as well as with other editorial teams within Cell Press. Additionally, you will represent the journal at conferences, seminars, and scientific meetings, which will help you build a broad network of domestic and international contacts. This position offers a unique opportunity to lead a premier journal in the molecular biology research arena, contributing to the overall publishing strategy of Cell Press and enhancing its vibrant portfolio. The position is flexible in terms of location, with options available in various cities across the US, Europe, UK, or China, where Cell Press offices are situated. You will report directly to a Publishing Director at Cell Press, ensuring that the journal remains at the forefront of molecular biology research.

Responsibilities

  • Further refining and expanding the strategic focus of this established journal
  • Hiring and managing a team of scientific editors
  • Establishing relationships with and continuing to build the advisory board
  • Managing day-to-day operations at the journal
  • Reaching out to the community and recruiting exciting papers within the scope of the journal
  • Collaborating on defining production workflows, marketing, social media and website
  • Collaborating with editorial teams of relevant Cell Press journals

Requirements

  • Possess a Ph.D. in any area of molecular biology
  • Have 5+ years of full-time editorial experience
  • Possess a broad interest across the full spectrum of molecular biology research
  • Display an established network with the molecular biology research community
  • Demonstrate solid project and/or people management skills
  • Possess exceptional organizational skills
  • Display excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Have an interest in engaging with the scientific community
  • Possess previous management experience is beneficial but not required
