About the position

The Editor-in-Chief at the Center for Responsive Schools (CRS) is a pivotal leadership role responsible for guiding the Publishing House to ensure adherence to the House and Program Style Guides. This position is integral to maintaining editorial excellence, brand integrity, and the overall direction of the publishing program. The Editor-in-Chief will oversee the entire publishing pipeline, ensuring that a sufficient number of high-quality manuscripts are in production to meet the annual release goals. The role encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including author and content acquisition, fiscal management, and editorial oversight, all aimed at positioning CRS as a leader in educational publishing. In this role, the Editor-in-Chief will implement a successful author acquisition strategy, develop a robust publishing pipeline, and conduct market research to identify new product opportunities. The position requires collaboration with various stakeholders, including brand and imprint Chiefs, to select manuscripts and maintain a pool of expert reviewers. The Editor-in-Chief will also oversee the peer review process, ensuring that all published works align with the established criteria and budget. Financially, the Editor-in-Chief will develop and manage the annual budget for publications, monitor sales, and conduct audits to assess the success of titles. This includes overseeing the reprint process and collaborating with division heads to set strategies for meeting publication goals. The role demands a commitment to editorial excellence, ensuring that all products reflect CRS's core values and meet high standards of quality and clarity. Project management is another critical aspect of this position, as the Editor-in-Chief will lead the development of production timelines, negotiate contracts, and oversee the entire project management process from concept to completion. This includes ensuring that all products are delivered on time and within budget while maintaining high-quality standards. The Editor-in-Chief will also support the production of marketing collateral and collaborate with other departments to achieve organizational goals. The Editor-in-Chief will represent CRS at conferences and public events, contributing to the organization's strategy and vision. This role requires a professional demeanor, strong leadership skills, and the ability to foster a collaborative and productive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Implement a successful author acquisition and content contributor program to maintain a marketable publications pipeline.
  • Develop a robust publishing pipeline that produces timely and relevant books.
  • Oversee all stages of product development and product life-cycling.
  • Conduct regular market research to identify opportunities for new retail products relevant to the brand or imprint.
  • Collaborate with brand and imprint Chiefs to identify authors, develop proposals, and review/select manuscripts.
  • Lead and collaborate with other key leaders to maintain a sufficient pool of expert and responsive reviewers.
  • Oversee the peer review of manuscripts and help authors develop their manuscripts for publication.
  • Identify portfolio expansion opportunities and execute strategies for expanding the CRS retail product portfolio.
  • Develop and oversee the annual department and project budget for publications.
  • Monitor sales and perform regular audits of products to determine the success of titles.
  • Provide oversight to the reprint process to ensure necessary corrections are made at reprint.
  • Collaborate with division heads and Director of Book Sales to set strategies for meeting target goals for publications.
  • Ensure Publishing House staff understand and meet performance expectations for their roles.
  • Provide leadership to ensure products reflect CRS's core message and values.
  • Establish clear guidelines for authors regarding acceptable practices for sharing experimental materials and information.
  • Hire, develop, and retain talented editorial and writing staff.
  • Lead the publishing pipeline from concept to completion, including title proposals and production timelines.
  • Negotiate contracts and rights with authors, oversee fact-checking and copyrights, and ensure on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Sales on strategies to meet sales targets for front and backlist titles.
  • Support all work units in achieving their editorial, print, videography, photography, graphic design, and production goals.
  • Represent CRS at conferences and other public arenas in a positive and professional manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism, publications, or related field; Master's preferred.
  • At least 7 years of progressively responsible work with a publisher, with at least 3 years in an editorial supervisory position.
  • Ability to operate on both tactical and strategic levels overseeing an effective editorial and publishing team.
  • Exceptional project management expertise, particularly in overseeing multiple complex projects in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Deep publications expertise, including budgeting, printing, editorial and production management, and related technologies.
  • Experience with the Chicago Manual of Style and implementing House Style Guide preferred.
  • Proficient in Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, InCopy, and other Creative Suite products.
  • Strong editing and writing skills, with knowledge of proofreading, copyediting, line editing, and developmental editing.
  • Experience with book development and production and project management.
  • Ability to communicate with respect and authority for a range of purposes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working with vendors and contractors for writing, illustration, photography, and other related services.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, social media, Google productivity software, and CRM software like Monday, Salesforce, and HubSpot.
