About the position

The Massachusetts Medical Society (MMS) is seeking an Editorial Production Technology and Content Manager to coordinate, manage, and support XML processing and production of NEJM content in relation to the NISO Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS). This role is crucial in developing XML workflows and processes, as well as maintaining and enhancing Editorial Production tools in XML-based applications and standards such as eXtyles, Arbortext, Typefi, and XPath/XQuery/XSLT/Schematron. The successful candidate will work closely with various Editorial Production departments, including Graphic Arts, Manuscript Editing, and Online Editorial, to ensure the efficient production and accurate display of NEJM content for both online and print publication. The Editorial Production Technology and Content Manager will be responsible for managing the Editorial Production tracking and scheduling database, currently in Filemaker, and will evaluate alternative solutions as necessary. This position requires collaboration with other departments to develop XML protocols and processes for NEJM content, including consultation on appropriate schemas and taxonomies for content management. The role also involves creating and maintaining JATS tagging style and production guidelines, interpreting JATS XML specifications to meet NEJM requirements, and training staff on XML and other production tasks. In addition to these responsibilities, the Editorial Production Technology and Content Manager will collaborate with other MMS departments, NEJM Editorial Production groups, and outside vendors on technological innovations involving NEJM metadata and content. Staying updated on technological developments and innovations through conferences and training is also a key aspect of this role. Responsibilities

  • Coordinates and oversees technology and processes employed by Editorial Production in the publication of NEJM.
  • Ensures that source XML is produced accurately and on schedule, conforming to established formats and quality standards.
  • Manages, maintains, and enhances Editorial Production tracking and scheduling database (currently in Filemaker).
  • Works closely with other Editorial Production departments on XML used for display of text and graphics.
  • Develops XML protocols and processes for NEJM content, including consultation about appropriate schemas and taxonomies.
  • Creates and maintains JATS tagging style and production guidelines for producing NEJM content.
  • Interprets JATS XML specification to suit NEJM requirements, mapping all NEJM content to appropriate JATS structures.
  • Helps train staff as needed to handle XML and other production tasks.
  • Collaborates with other MMS departments, NEJM Editorial Production groups, and outside vendors on technological innovations involving NEJM metadata and content.
  • Keeps abreast of technological developments and innovations by attending conferences and taking advantage of training.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • A minimum of 10 years of editorial production experience, preferably in the setting of an academic journal with an emphasis on medical/scientific content.
  • Excellent logic and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with NISO Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS) XML and with medical journal content.
  • Ability to devise and perform software testing.
  • Knowledge of XML workflows and tools such as Arbortext and Oxygen.
  • Skills to help develop and test new processes for XML, InDesign, and text conversions.
  • Knowledge of web publishing processes.
  • Working knowledge of publishing tools including Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office, FileMaker, Oxygen, and Windows and Mac OSX platforms.
