About the position

The Education Curator at Mexic-Arte Museum plays a pivotal role in leading and managing the museum's educational programming and internship initiatives. This position is essential for ensuring that the museum's educational offerings align with its mission to present and interpret Mexican, Mexican American, and Latinx art and culture. The Education Curator will oversee both daily operations and long-term strategies for education development, which includes organizing tours, outreach, and community engagement activities. Collaboration is key, as the Education Curator will work closely with the Curator and Director of Programs to create exhibit-related programming and activities that enhance visitor engagement and learning. In addition to managing educational programs, the Education Curator will be responsible for the internship program, ensuring that it provides valuable experiences for interns and prepares them for careers in museum settings. This includes overseeing recruitment, orientation, and ongoing support for interns, as well as maintaining relationships with educational institutions. The role requires a strong commitment to developing innovative educational content that caters to diverse audiences, including K-12 students, families, and adults. The Education Curator will also be involved in translating educational materials into Spanish, making the museum's offerings accessible to a broader audience. The position demands excellent organizational skills, the ability to multitask, and a passion for arts education. The Education Curator will also participate in professional organizations and contribute to collective event activities, ensuring that the museum remains a vibrant educational resource in the community.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and management oversight of the museum's educational programming and internship program.
  • Oversee daily and long-range operations of education development including tours and programs, outreach, and community engagement.
  • Collaborate with the Curator and Director of Programs to develop exhibit-related programming and activities.
  • Act as a liaison to the Curatorial Department, providing input during the development of exhibitions and educational components.
  • Translate written material for exhibitions and educational content from English to Spanish.
  • Direct and coordinate a broad-based education program that aligns with the museum's mission.
  • Develop, research, and implement innovative educational programming for diverse audiences.
  • Jointly develop educational workshops and programs for the public and teachers.
  • Manage and oversee the internship program, ensuring it prepares interns for museum careers.
  • Lead all aspects of the internship recruitment process, including screening and orientation.
  • Evaluate individual and overall internship program performance regularly and make improvements as needed.
  • Assist in planning school programs based on exhibitions and partnerships with teachers and schools.
  • Develop curriculum related to exhibitions for K-12 art education outreach programming.
  • Assist with the implementation of tours, Family Days, summer camps, and artist workshops.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in art history, arts education, museum studies, or related fields.
  • One or more years of professional experience in arts education, including curriculum and program design.
  • Excellent organizational and computer skills.
  • Ability to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Spanish.
  • Extensive knowledge of Latinx and Latin American art, history, and culture.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English, both spoken and written.
  • Ability to obtain Texas Background Check approval and possess a valid TX driver's license.
  • Effective time management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask.
