About the position

LaGuardia Community College, located in Long Island City, Queens, is seeking an Academic Program Job Developer (Education Fieldwork Coordinator) to oversee field placements for Associate Degree teacher education students. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the New York City public school system and will be responsible for ensuring that teacher candidates are well-prepared to meet the needs of a diverse urban student population. This role involves collaboration with faculty in the Education program to identify K-12 sites for student placements, assess the effectiveness of current placements, and monitor compliance with New York State certification guidelines for field experiences. The Education Fieldwork Coordinator will communicate with school district personnel, administrators, and cooperating teachers to foster relationships that enhance the quality of field experiences for pre-service teachers. This includes organizing orientation sessions for cooperating teachers and teacher candidates, advising students on field requirements, and contributing to professional development workshops. The coordinator will also develop and update written guides on field requirements and maintain administrative records of clinical experiences. In addition to these responsibilities, the coordinator may contribute to other projects as needed, ensuring that the Education program continues to provide high-quality training and support for future educators. This position reports to the chair of the Education & Language Acquisition Department and plays a crucial role in the success of teacher education at LaGuardia Community College.

Responsibilities

  • Arrange and oversee field placements for Associate Degree teacher education students.
  • Identify K-12 sites and place students in fieldwork observation placements across New York City.
  • Contribute to the assessment of the effectiveness of current field placements and determine future placement needs.
  • Monitor adherence of programs to New York State certification guidelines for field experience.
  • Communicate with school district personnel, school administrators, and cooperating teachers to support and maintain relationships for quality field experiences.
  • Coordinate and contribute to orientation sessions for cooperating teachers regarding their role in preparing pre-service teachers.
  • Manage information sharing and support for the placement and mentorship provided to student teachers in clinical placements.
  • Organize and contribute to orientation sessions for teacher candidates and faculty regarding field requirements and placements.
  • Advise individual students on field requirements and troubleshoot individual cases as necessary.
  • Contribute to professional development workshops and support services for education students.
  • Develop and update written guides on field requirements for students, faculty, and public school personnel.
  • Maintain administrative files and records of clinical experiences.
  • Contribute to other projects as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree and four years' relevant experience required.
  • Master's degree in education or related area strongly preferred.
  • Experience with teacher preparation and licensing programs, in-school teacher preparation or professional development, and/or teaching or administration experience in a public school setting is required.
  • Experience in many of these areas in New York City schools strongly preferred.
  • Self-motivated with outstanding organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Computer proficiency including Zoom, Word, Excel, and Teams.

Nice-to-haves
