About the position

The Education Specialist provides an educational program for individuals with exceptional needs and special education services. This role involves consulting with regular teachers and parents, coordinating information and resources, implementing Special Education services, and monitoring the development of Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs). The Education Specialist also assists in planning parent education workshops and performs responsibilities similar to those of a classroom teacher.

Responsibilities

• Consults with regular teachers regarding identification and assessment of learning and behavioral patterns in pupils.
• Consults with parents or other support personnel regarding appropriate resources for individuals with exceptional needs.
• Coordinates information and resources for IEP Team meetings and instructional planning.
• Implements Special Education services and IEPs for individuals with exceptional needs.
• Monitors the development of IEPs and referral procedures in accordance with legal requirements.
• Processes information leading to approval of services by child's parent or guardian.
• Schedules IEP meetings, including reviews.
• Applies classroom environment and behavior management techniques.
• Utilizes systematic observations for referral to IEP Team meetings.
• Provides parents with information regarding assessment procedures and remedial methods.
• Assists in planning parent education in-services and workshops.
• Performs other responsibilities similar to those of a classroom teacher.

Requirements

• Valid California Teaching Credential in Special Education.
• Valid Education Specialist Certificate.
• Experience desirable.
• Knowledge of Hughes Bill requirements and Section 504 as it applies to the Individual Disability Education Act.
• Ability to communicate in writing for reports and correspondence.
