About the position

The Education Specialist is responsible for delivering educational programs and advocacy within schools and community settings, focusing on issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault. This full-time role requires independent judgment and includes evening and weekend hours, as well as participation in on-call duties.

Responsibilities

  • Present education and awareness programs to pre-K through grade 12 in schools throughout the service region.
  • Provide training and education programs for university students, health care workers, law enforcement, business personnel, church groups, and other community organizations.
  • Provide psycho-educational programs in substance use disorder treatment centers within the service area.
  • Present prevention curriculum to adjudicated youth as referred by county juvenile probation.
  • Increase community awareness of the agency's services by representing the organization at health fairs and other awareness-raising venues.
  • Design fliers, brochures, handouts, advertisements, educational tri-folds, and display centers for health fairs, school programs, and other awareness/educational programs.
  • Contact school administrators in districts with established relationships to offer and schedule prevention education programs.
  • Contact school administrators in districts without established relationships to offer prevention education programs and negotiate Memorandums of Understanding.
  • Perform systems advocacy and maintain statistics and strict record-keeping.
  • Contribute to grant research and grant writing as assigned by the Outreach Coordinator.
  • Attend staff meetings, case review meetings, in-services, training, and additional meetings as assigned.
  • Collaborate with another Education Specialist to update classroom curriculum.
  • Provide direct services to victims of crime by offering on-call coverage, hotline counseling, and other duties as assigned.
  • Participate in daily operations of the agency, including answering the telephone and responding to emails.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a related field preferred; Associate Degree or three years classroom setting experience required.
  • Completion of the 80-hour Transitions Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault counselor training.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to present information clearly through writing and public speaking.
  • Ability to deal with the emotional component of presentations and handle disclosures at outreach presentations.
  • Knowledgeable of domestic violence, sexual assault, and relevant issues impacting victims.
  • Proficient in various computer programs, including Microsoft products.
  • Familiar and competent with Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites.
  • Possess a reliable vehicle and have a valid driver's license with no restrictions.
  • Must have Act 151 and Act 34 clearances.

Nice-to-haves

  • Journalistic expertise and experience are helpful.
