About the position

The Education Support Professional (SpEd LRC 1:1) at Tacoma Public Schools provides dedicated one-on-one assistance to a student with disabilities, supporting their academic and personal care needs throughout the school day. This role involves collaborating with certificated teachers to implement instructional activities, assist with daily living tasks, and ensure a safe and conducive learning environment. The position requires completion of state-mandated training and certification, emphasizing the importance of professional development in the field of special education.

Responsibilities

  • Provides one-on-one assistance to an assigned student with a disability in all school activities and day-to-day needs.
  • Assists a certificated teacher with instructional and personal care needs for students with a broad range of disabilities.
  • Records student progress on data sheets and prepares reports to assist the teacher.
  • Supervises students during recess or lunch periods and assists with bus loading or unloading.
  • Models positive behavior for students and corrects inappropriate behavior as necessary.
  • May instruct students in self-care activities and assist with personal hygiene tasks.
  • Participates in department staff meetings and provides information regarding students.
  • May perform clerical assistance in the classroom and supervise students during teacher breaks.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or 72 credit hours of post-secondary education or passing state test to demonstrate knowledge.
  • One year of experience working with special needs individuals who may have severe disabilities.
  • CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to be trained within the first 90 days of employment.
  • Completion of state-mandated General Paraeducator Certificate.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of assigned developmental, behavioral, and/or physical disabilities.
  • Basic sign language skills for designated positions.
