About the position

The Educational Assistant in the Special Education department provides instructional support to students with varying needs under the supervision of certified teachers. This role involves assisting in classroom activities, monitoring student progress, and implementing individualized support plans for students with disabilities. The position requires collaboration with teachers and other staff to ensure students' educational, health, and personal care needs are met effectively.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the teacher in the instruction and support of students at varying levels of need.
  • Instruct students in groups or individually.
  • Assist the teacher in monitoring and documenting the progress of students.
  • Provide input to the teacher on planning lessons and evaluating results.
  • Perform other tasks to assist the teacher, such as grading papers and preparing teaching materials.
  • Provide oral and/or written interpretation and translation for students and their families if bilingual.
  • Assist students with personal care needs, including transitions and sensory breaks.
  • Participate in collecting data related to students' behaviors and contribute to behavior support plans.
  • Implement social skills instruction and behavior intervention plans as designed by the teacher.
  • Utilize district-approved de-escalation and physical intervention techniques when necessary.
  • Support students' development of self-regulation through the use of sensory tools.
  • Communicate effectively with students to promote positive behavior and conflict resolution.
  • Build students' communication abilities using methods instructed by the speech/language pathologist and classroom teacher.
  • Meet students' physical, communication, and instructional needs using adaptive equipment and technology.
  • Perform health tasks and implement individualized protocols as delegated by medical staff.
  • Assist in the supervision of students in various settings on campus.
  • Work effectively with individuals from diverse cultures or backgrounds.

Requirements

  • Prior experience working with students.
  • Bilingual skills in one of the district's top languages (Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Vietnamese, Arabic, Somali) preferred.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, mathematics, and basic understanding of subjects relevant to the role.
  • Ability to type accurately and use word processing programs and office machines.
  • Knowledge of classroom practices and school operations.
  • Ability to project a pleasant manner and relate well to students.
  • Flexibility and patience in supervising and instructing students with diverse skill levels.
  • Understanding and empathy for students with special needs and familiarity with instructional techniques.
  • Ability to plan and organize instructional materials effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with students, parents, and staff.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and ethical behavior regarding student information.
  • Ability to complete competency training from professionals in various fields.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with special needs students.
  • Certification in Crisis Intervention, Medication Administration, First Aid/CPR, and other relevant trainings.
