About the position

The Educator Assistant position at The Salvation Army's Culinary Training Academy is a part-time role focused on supporting the day-to-day operations of the culinary program. The assistant will help instruct students, supervise kitchen operations, and ensure the successful completion of the training program. This role is essential in fostering a learning environment and assisting with various culinary tasks and responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with recruitment, promotion, and conducting interviews for potential students.
  • Coordinate teaching and instruction for culinary students.
  • Instruct students in culinary theory, lab exercises, and hands-on training in the kitchen.
  • Monitor students' performance and suggest improvements to meet course standards.
  • Maintain records and documentation to support class training and student progress.
  • Assist in tracking and maintaining records of graduating culinary students.
  • Supervise kitchen personnel and volunteers in the absence of the Culinary Instructor/Kitchen Manager.
  • Assist with catering duties and emergency disaster responses.
  • Provide meal service for special events and prepare meals during shifts.
  • Assist with storage and receipt of food and goods received.
  • Report problems in writing to the Culinary Instructor/Kitchen Manager.
  • Maintain efficient kitchen operations including food procurement, preparation, and cleanliness.
  • Ensure safe and attractive food preparation for meals and snacks.
  • Schedule pick-up of supplies and donations.
  • Research methods to minimize food expenses and maintain a weekly schedule of assignments for students and volunteers.
  • Develop weekly menus that are creative and nutritious in coordination with the Culinary Instructor/Kitchen Manager.
  • Conduct monthly physical inventory of kitchen food and supplies.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Certified from a Culinary Program or 3 years' experience in the hospitality industry.
  • Must possess a food handlers' certification at the time of employment.
  • Ability to work independently and with minimum supervision.
  • Knowledgeable in food service ordering, inventory management, budgeting, food preparation, and equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions and correspondence.
  • Ability to write clear correspondence and present information effectively.
  • Must complete the manager level ServeSafe training within 60 days of employment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in supervising kitchen operations.
  • Knowledge of catering and event meal service.
