About the position

The Safety Specialist will oversee all safety aspects at the client's facility near Schaumburg. This role is crucial in ensuring that safety procedures are developed, implemented, and adhered to within the organization. The Safety Specialist will assist in re-working the safety manual and champion the safety team, which is composed of other department heads. This position requires a hands-on approach, as the specialist will work directly on the floor with operators, engineers, and department heads to ensure that safety procedures are being followed effectively. In addition to overseeing safety protocols, the Safety Specialist will be responsible for planning, implementing, controlling, and optimizing operational processes related to health, safety, and the environment. This includes maintaining OSHA Injury & Illness record keeping, specifically the 300, 300A, and 301 forms, and ensuring they are submitted on time. The specialist will coordinate and cooperate with regulatory bodies and advise management on health, safety, and environmental (HSE) issues, as well as provide guidance to responsible managers and employees regarding environmental protection, health protection, and occupational safety. The role also involves assisting with training and instruction in HSE areas, developing and maintaining key performance indicators (KPIs) such as the total case rate (TCR), and reporting these metrics monthly. The Safety Specialist will organize certifications, manage external audits, and implement internal audits to ensure compliance with safety regulations. They will carry out risk assessments, suggest improvements, and monitor corrective measures to enhance safety practices. Furthermore, the specialist will control and monitor compliance with environmental and safety laws and regulations, providing technical support to ensure that HSE requirements are met.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant area of study strongly preferred.
  • 3+ years of HSE experience in a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience writing safety instructions.
  • Ability to travel a few times per year.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to be hands-on.
