About the position

The EHS Specialist at Synthio Chemicals is responsible for developing and implementing health and safety programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. This role involves collaborating with a team of chemists and engineers to build an EH&S program suitable for industrial-scale manufacturing, transitioning from a laboratory-focused program. The position requires a hands-on approach to safety management in a fast-paced environment, focusing on continuous improvement and effective communication of safety initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement health and safety programs to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations, including continuous improvement.
  • Assist in incident investigations, counter measures, and resolution of EH&S issues, including trending of workplace incidents or injuries.
  • Facilitate internal and external audits, implementing corrective actions and reporting to external authorities as necessary.
  • Evaluate operations and projects to ensure compliance with various local, state, and federal regulators, including EPA and OSHA, to identify and mitigate workplace hazards.
  • Collaborate on risk assessments and job hazard analysis creation and implementation.
  • Manage and perform tasks related to waste handling, storage, and disposal requirements according to state, DOT, and RCRA requirements, including coordination of removal with TSDF.
  • Conduct safety training and orientations.
  • Lead Safety Team meetings, assigning duties and implementing corrective actions as needed.
  • Assist with local, state, and federal environmental permitting as needed.
  • Collaborate with engineers, chemists, and/or Principal Investigators to develop and maintain safety plans for highly hazardous material handling and emergency response.
  • Champion Emergency Response Program, clearly document work, report on task progress and communicate results.

Requirements

  • 3+ years relevant work experience
  • BS/MS in OHS or related field, or BS/MS in chemistry
  • Understanding of chemistry desirable but not required
  • DOT and RCRA certified, or the ability to obtain OSHA 10 certification preferred but not required
  • Self-sufficient with a strong attention to detail
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to convey important safety initiatives and interpretation of SDS information
  • Strong technical, problem-solving, and time-management skills
  • Experience in implementing regulatory requirements
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with short deadlines
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to lift 30 pounds
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and must be able to pass a background check
