About the position

The English Language Development (ELD) Teacher is responsible for providing specialized English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction to English Learners (EL) across designated schools and classrooms. This role is crucial for helping students develop their English language skills and effectively perform in academic settings. The ELD Teacher will work closely with students and their families to maintain open lines of communication regarding both academic and behavioral progress. The position requires a commitment to professional development and the continuous improvement of teaching practices. The ELD Teacher will plan and implement a program of study tailored to meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students. This includes guiding the learning process towards achieving curriculum goals and regularly assessing student accomplishments to provide progress reports. The teacher will also assist in language assessments and provide individualized and small group instruction to support English language acquisition. Effective classroom management and culturally relevant instructional practices are essential components of this role. Collaboration with SEI teachers and other staff members is vital to align instructional goals and methods. The ELD Teacher will support EL students in various aspects of their education, including academic vocabulary, reading, writing, and clarification of assignments. Additionally, the teacher will assist in the administration of state tests and participate in reclassification meetings for students transitioning out of EL services. Attendance at professional meetings and compliance with state policies regarding English Learners are also required.

Responsibilities

  • Plans a program of study that meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of students.
  • Guides the learning process toward achieving curriculum goals aligned with lesson objectives.
  • Assesses student accomplishments regularly and provides progress reports.
  • Assists with language assessments of students, seeking help from district specialists as needed.
  • Provides individualized and small group English Language Development (ELD) instruction to English Learners (EL).
  • Plans, develops, and implements ELD instruction and Massachusetts English language proficiency standards.
  • Utilizes effective ELD classroom techniques to enhance second language acquisition and academic language.
  • Demonstrates effective classroom management and behavioral interventions to engage students.
  • Exhibits cultural proficiency and uses culturally relevant instructional practices.
  • Collaborates with SEI teachers to align instruction and cooperates with staff in planning instructional goals and methods.
  • Supports EL students' English language acquisition and classroom instructional needs.
  • Assists with the oversight and delivery of Massachusetts state tests and administers screening tests for EL identification.
  • Prepares for and assists with organization of EL students' reclassification meetings.
  • Attends professional ELD meetings and serves on building or district committees.
  • Understands and complies with state policies regarding English Learners.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal, Department Head, or Assistant Superintendent.

Requirements

  • MA DESE Licensure: Teacher, English as a Second Language, 5-12
  • Successful experience teaching students with a wide range of abilities, interests, and needs, particularly bilingual/bicultural students.
  • Bachelor's Degree (Advanced educational preparation in ESL preferred).
  • Knowledge and understanding of ELD instruction and second language acquisition.
