About the position

The Electric Field Engineer at NiSource is responsible for implementing and coordinating the installation and energization of high voltage equipment. This role involves developing operating orders, providing technical support, maintaining operational data, and ensuring system reliability and safety in electric substations and transmission lines.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and distributes electric substation operating orders, line operating orders, general orders and guidelines for all electric substations and lines.
  • Provides technical support and operational data to various operating, planning, and engineering groups.
  • Originates, distributes, and maintains single line diagrams for all electric substations and operating switching maps for all transmission lines.
  • Creates, provides, and maintains numerous technical information databases associated with system operations and functions.
  • Assigns equipment and line designations in and for electric substations and line switches.
  • Monitors current electric system operating conditions using Energy Management Systems and other computer data-based systems.
  • Works with Dispatcher - Operators and other operating groups to resolve issues affecting safety and system reliability.
  • Conducts frequent field inspections of construction sites to monitor progress and maintain close affiliation with field operating personnel.
  • Provides guidance to Dispatcher-Operators on routine and emergency substation and line switching, electric system restoration, and outage evaluation issues.
  • Meets frequently with various teams to address current and future operational and construction issues.
  • Assists in the storm restoration process where needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology from an ABET accredited program.
  • Experience in the electric utility industry.
  • Understanding of basic engineering/technical theories and principles.
  • Ability to read/interpret drawings/standards to analyze/solve problems.
  • Knowledge of computer applications such as AutoCad, Word, Excel, Access.
  • Knowledge of electric engineering principles.
  • Ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to perform duties under close supervision.
  • Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with customers, contractors, and various company operational and technical groups.
  • Possess organizational and planning skills.
  • Possess team building skills.
  • Understanding of basic principles of project management.
  • Knowledge of electric system and dispatching operational concepts.
  • Ability to use high voltage test equipment.
