About the position

The Electrical and Controls Engineering Intern position at ITW Hartness is designed for candidates who are eager to develop their skills in electrical design specifically for automation equipment and machine-based automation and control theory. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a dynamic environment, where interns will work closely with experienced engineers and participate in real-world projects. Interns will utilize CAD design software to create control panels, develop PLC programs for machine centers, and interface HMI programs with PLC and system functions. Additionally, they will be responsible for creating and maintaining I/O lists that coordinate electrical design with program design, as well as reading and maintaining electrical schematics. The internship also emphasizes the importance of understanding industry standards that govern machine design, allowing interns to research and implement these standards in their work. Interns will have the chance to visit customer sites to see ITW Hartness products in action, providing valuable insights into the practical applications of their work. Networking opportunities with other departments and company leadership will further enhance the internship experience, fostering a collaborative and engaging work environment. This position is based at the company's headquarters in Greenville, South Carolina, and is part of a robust summer internship program that encourages innovation, cost reduction, and process optimization to develop effective solutions for customers.

Responsibilities

  • Obtain electrical and controls engineering design and hands-on experience creating secondary packaging equipment by assisting with customer or R&D projects.
  • Design control panels utilizing CAD software.
  • Develop and create PLC programs for machine centers.
  • Interface HMI programs with PLC and system functions.
  • Create and maintain I/O lists used to coordinate electrical design with program design.
  • Read and maintain electrical schematics.
  • Research and implement industry standards.
  • Become familiar with business processes and product improvement skills to innovate, reduce costs, optimize processes, and develop solutions.

Requirements

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics from an accredited university.
  • Exposure to CAD software and PLC programming.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively to develop new concepts and solve problems.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Methodical and logical mindset for performing root cause analysis.
  • Proficient with common Microsoft Office Suite programs such as Excel, Word, and Outlook.
