About the position

The firm is seeking a Patent Agent to join its Electronics group, which collaborates with cutting-edge innovators globally. The ideal candidate will have expertise in areas such as 5G and LTE wireless communications, semiconductors, and computer architecture. As a Patent Agent, you will be supported by two formal mentors and have the opportunity to request a mentor change annually. The firm encourages career development, allowing Patent Agents to either continue in their role or consider applying to law school to become an Associate. The position is primarily based in Washington, D.C., with flexibility for the right candidate. The starting base salary for this role ranges from $130,000 to $160,000, depending on experience and qualifications. In this role, you will conduct patent searches to assess the novelty and patentability of inventions in the electrical and computer engineering fields. You will draft and prepare patent applications, ensuring they meet legal requirements and technical accuracy. Collaboration with inventors and attorneys is essential to gather necessary information for patent filings. You will also evaluate and respond to office actions from patent offices to secure patent allowances and conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate assessments. Staying updated with changes in patent laws and regulations relevant to electrical engineering is crucial, as is performing research into developing and emerging technologies.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct patent searches to assess the novelty and patentability of inventions in wireless, semiconductor, and computer architecture fields.
  • Draft and prepare patent applications, ensuring technical accuracy and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Collaborate with inventors and attorneys to gather essential information for patent filings.
  • Evaluate and respond to office actions from patent offices to secure patent allowances.
  • Conduct patentability and freedom-to-operate assessments for electrical engineering inventions.
  • Keep up-to-date with changes in patent laws and regulations relevant to electrical engineering.
  • Perform research into developing and emerging technologies.

Requirements

  • About 2-3 years of experience practicing as a Patent Agent, with flexibility on years of previous experience.
  • Masters or PhD preferred in electrical engineering and/or computer engineering.
  • Stellar academic credentials.
  • Demonstrated technical expertise in areas such as 5G/wireless communications, computer architecture, semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, deep learning, software engineering, and programming.
  • An enterprising spirit to build on the comprehensive formal and informal training provided.
