About the position

The Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Surface Surveillance Systems Support Team is seeking an experienced Electrical/Computer Engineer to provide engineering support for critical systems such as Airport Surface Detection Equipment (ASDE-3 and ASDE-X), Runway Status Lights (RWSL), and Airport Surface Surveillance Capability (ASSC). These systems are essential for ensuring safety and efficiency at major airports across the United States. The successful candidate will play a vital role in maintaining and enhancing these systems, which are integral to airport operations. In this position, you will be responsible for providing engineering support services to resolve hardware and software issues that arise at field sites. You will also support the technology refresh of legacy system hardware and software, ensuring that our systems remain up-to-date and effective. Your role will involve assisting with unit, regression, and integration testing, as well as writing requirements for new hardware and evaluating its performance. You will contribute to the full lifecycle support of the ASDE-X system, which includes design, build, test, implementation, and sustainment phases. Additionally, you will provide guidance and support to new engineers and technicians, fostering a collaborative environment within the team. The position may require occasional travel to airports across the nation to provide on-site engineering support, making it essential for candidates to be flexible and willing to travel as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Provide engineering support services for resolving hardware/software issues at field sites
  • Support technology refresh of legacy system hardware and software
  • Assist with unit, regression and integration testing
  • Write requirements for new hardware and evaluate new hardware
  • Contribute to the full lifecycle support of the ASDE-X system (design, build, test, implement, sustain)
  • Provide guidance and support for new engineers and technicians
  • Occasional travel to airports across the nation to provide engineering support

Requirements

  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required. All applicants must have resided in the United States for the past 3 years.
  • 12+ years' experience as a professional Test/System engineer.
  • Experience writing and analyzing requirements.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills with ability to organize, present and explain information.
  • Excited to participate in a team environment but able to work well individually.
  • Self-motivated to deliver quality products with limited direction and guidance.
  • Understands the importance of collaboration with other team members.
  • Ability to pass an FAA background investigation (US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required).
  • Telework is allowed but applicant must come into the office at least two days a week.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% if required.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering or Computer Science is required. The degree must be from a school of engineering accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum.

  • Experience designing, testing and troubleshooting electronic circuits
  • Working knowledge of communications protocols
  • Knowledge of analog circuits including RF and waveguides
  • Experience with Radar is a plus
  • Field technical support experience is a plus
