About the position

The Electrical Controls Engineer at Allied Mineral Products is responsible for supporting the development and implementation of manufacturing information and automation strategies. This role involves collaborating with various engineering disciplines to enhance existing systems and processes, as well as integrating data collection technologies into research processes. The engineer will focus on both plant engineering and research and development, ensuring effective project management and technical expertise in electrical controls and automation.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and integrate hardware/sensors, software, and data acquisition tools for IoT/Industry 4.0 applications.
  • Ensure data integrity for analysis and visualization solutions using SQL, Lab View, Ignition, and Microsoft Power BI.
  • Extract and analyze data from multiple platforms to develop analytics reports and visualization toolsets.
  • Familiarity with and ability to use, program, and debug PLC, HMI, and robot software.
  • Design and deploy manufacturing/operations equipment controls and data acquisition infrastructure.
  • Lead equipment network asset management for the manufacturing process network.
  • Develop, implement, and interpret process and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Coordinate activities between R&D, Operations, and IT.
  • Manage plant engineering projects from beginning to end, including defining requirements and developing designs.
  • Responsible for electrical controls aspects of projects including hardware and software design.
  • Evaluate new and used equipment, designing electrical controls for plant and lab systems.
  • Develop and implement control systems designs, including gathering requirements and performing calculations.
  • Produce accurate mechanical and electrical drawings for equipment and facilities.
  • Prepare specifications for bidding and purchasing of equipment and services.
  • Coordinate outside contractors to complete assigned projects.
  • Provide training and instruction to Maintenance and other employees on updated systems and safety topics.
  • Provide timely support to troubleshoot hardware and software issues and improve equipment uptime.
  • Maintain communication with Maintenance, Production, and other departments.
  • Support manufacturing operations globally, with occasional travel required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, IT, Physics, or a similar technical field, or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 5 years of related work experience, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of industrial electrical controls, PLC programming, and power distribution systems.
  • In-depth understanding of North American electrical codes and industry standards (UL, NFPA, NEC, IEC).
  • Ability to design electrical circuits and panels for industrial equipment and perform electrical design calculations.
  • Knowledge of technologies applicable to industrial equipment such as PLCs, VFDs, proximity switches, safety devices, and HMIs.
  • Excellent troubleshooting skills (hardware and software) and a practical approach to problem solving.
  • Experience with Industrial Ethernet Networks.
  • PLC programming and application knowledge, specifically with Allen Bradley and Automation Direct PLCs.
  • HMI platform knowledge and programming capability (Ignition, Lab View, PanelView, C-More).
  • Familiarity with SQL Databases and Power BI.
  • Experience with AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical and Autodesk Fusion PLM is desired.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical design principles.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with SAP is a plus.
  • AutoCAD support certifications preferred.
