About the position

The Electrical Controls Specialist I/II positions at the City of Mesa, AZ, involve performing skilled electrical and instrumentation work related to the operation and maintenance of the City's water, wastewater, and gas systems. The roles are designed for individuals with varying levels of experience, with the Specialist I receiving close supervision and the Specialist II working more independently. Both positions require adherence to safety protocols and may involve hazardous conditions. The positions offer opportunities for career advancement based on performance and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Install, program, calibrate, and commission various electrical/instrumentation devices, including variable frequency drives, level transmitters, flow meters, radios, and power monitoring equipment.
  • Assist in the startup, commissioning, and troubleshooting of the process control system, including correcting problems with communications and field process variables.
  • Coordinate and acquire materials and equipment to repair or install at facilities.
  • Perform calibration and verification for the Arizona Corporation Commission on gas regulator stations.
  • Certify calibration for Inter-Agency flow meters.
  • Provide guidance and direction to Electrical Controls Specialist I's as needed and review their completed work for conformance and compliance with installation, maintenance, and repair specifications and standards.

Requirements

  • Any combination of training, education, and experience equivalent to a four-year electrical apprenticeship or graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology, Electronics, or related field.
  • For Specialist I: Three years of experience as a journey-level Electrician.
  • For Specialist II: Considerable (3 - 5 years) experience as a journey-level Electrician and good (1 - 3 years) experience in the instrumentation field.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with industrial controls, switchgears, and starters up to 480vac within an industrial background.
  • Experience with voltages up to 15kv is desirable.
  • Controls experience with an Instrumentation background is desirable.
